What it's about
Paul Theroux's 1975 account of a four-month train journey from London through Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Japan, returning via the Trans-Siberian Express, argues that the means of travel shapes what a traveler can know. Trains, by forcing proximity with strangers, reveal a country's social order more honestly than guidebooks or diplomacy. The book mattered because it revived literary travel writing as a genre built on voice, incident, and unflattering honesty rather than scenery.

What’s inside
- 1The Journey as the Subject1 min
A travel book can succeed by abandoning destinations entirely and treating the train compartment itself as the story.
- 2The Death of the Named Express1 min
The romance of trains like the Orient Express was largely a marketing invention that had already collapsed by the time Theroux rode its remnants.
- 3Borders That Do Not Match the Land1 min
A border checkpoint exposes the fiction of the nation-state more plainly than any political history.
- 4Colonial Rails, Repurposed1 min
Infrastructure built for extraction and control can be captured by the colonized and turned into something closer to a democratic space.
- 5When Proximity Is Not Understanding1 min
A travel writer can get physically close to a war and still fail to explain it, and the honest thing to do is admit that failure rather than dramatize past it.
- 6Efficiency Without Friction1 min
A society that removes delay and disorder from its trains also removes the accidental intimacy that makes a certain kind of travel writing possible.
- 7Boredom as the Truest Register1 min
Most travel writing lies by omission, and the tedium of a long journey deserves as much honest attention as its dramatic moments.
- 8The Unflattering Narrator as Method1 min
A travel writer's usefulness depends on refusing to flatter anyone, including himself, even at the cost of seeming unlikable.
