The Soul of a New Machine

What it's about
Tracy Kidder embeds inside Data General in the late 1970s to document the building of the Eagle (later marketed as the MV/8000), a 32-bit minicomputer rushed to market to compete with the company's own more prestigious Boston-based Eclipse team and with rival DEC's VAX. The book argues that great technical achievement is inseparable from obsession, sacrifice, and organizational politics, and it mattered because it gave general readers a true, unromanticized account of engineering work at the moment computers were becoming central to American life.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- Engineers and programmers who want to see their own experience of deadline obsession reflected honestly in print - General readers curious how a computer actually gets designed inside a real, flawed company - Managers and students of organizational behavior interested in how ambition and hierarchy shape technical teams
What’s inside
- 1Two Teams, One Company1 min
Data General's decision to let a scrappy, lower-status team build a competing machine reveals that internal rivalry, not top-down planning, often drives real innovation.
- 2Tom West and the Uses of Ambiguity1 min
Effective technical leadership sometimes depends on deliberately withholding information from your own team to keep them moving.
- 3Recruiting the Hungry and the Naive1 min
Building an ambitious machine on a shoestring required recruiting engineers who were too inexperienced to know they were being asked for the impossible.
- 4The Microcode Team and the Limits of Genius1 min
Individual brilliance, embodied here by Carl Alsing's and others' work on microcode, only becomes useful when it is made legible to a team that has to build on it.
- 5Debugging as the Real Work1 min
The glamorous part of engineering is designing the machine; the actual bulk of the labor, and the true test of the team, is finding out why it does not work.
- 6Working Themselves Into the Ground1 min
The team's extraordinary hours were not simply imposed by management but were partly self-inflicted, driven by engineers' need to prove themselves through suffering.
- 7The Machine Becomes Real1 min
A working prototype changes a team's relationship to their own project, converting abstract effort into an object that can finally be judged.
- 8Vindication and Its Costs1 min
The Eagle team's eventual success validated their approach but did not repair the personal costs the project had extracted, and many left soon after.
- 9What the Project Meant1 min
Kidder's closing argument is that this kind of intense, consuming technical project is a distinctly modern form of meaning-making that substitutes for other sources of purpose, for better and worse.
