What it's about
This book tells how a small group of researchers, funded by the Pentagon's ARPA, built the first packet-switched computer network in the late 1960s and 1970s. It argues that the internet was not the product of a single inventor or a Cold War panic about nuclear attack, but of engineering culture: open collaboration, informal standards, and graduate students given real authority. The story matters because it shows how durable infrastructure can emerge from loose coordination rather than central planning.

Who it's for
- Technology workers curious about the origins of the systems they build on - History readers who want a human account of a major infrastructure project - Students of innovation interested in how loosely coordinated teams outperform hierarchies
What’s inside
- 1A Problem Worth Solving1 min
The ARPANET began not from a mandate to survive nuclear war but from a mundane frustration: researchers at different universities each needed their own dedicated, expensive computer time and could not share resources.
- 2Hiring the Right Skeptic1 min
Bob Taylor's decision to hire the young, unproven Larry Roberts to run the project shows that technical ambition succeeds when paired with someone willing to force consensus among strong-willed experts.
- 3A Small Company Builds the Backbone1 min
The engineering firm Bolt Beranek and Newman, not a giant technology company, won the contract to build the physical network hardware, showing that resourceful small teams can outcompete larger rivals on genuinely novel problems.
- 4The First Message and Its Failure1 min
The first attempted transmission between UCLA and Stanford crashed after two letters, illustrating that early networked systems succeed only through relentless incremental debugging rather than working correctly on the first attempt.
- 5Protocols as Negotiated Agreements1 min
The Network Working Group's decision to publish informal, provisional technical documents called Requests for Comments shows that useful technical standards emerge from open, low-stakes negotiation rather than top-down decree.
- 6Packet Switching Proves Itself1 min
The rapid public demonstration of ARPANET at the 1972 International Conference on Computer Communication proved that packet switching, a still-contested idea, was practical at scale and not merely a theoretical curiosity.
- 7From One Network to Many1 min
Robert Kahn and Vint Cerf's design of TCP/IP in the mid-1970s solved the harder problem of connecting separate, incompatible networks together, which mattered more long-term than the original single ARPANET ever could.
About Katie Hafner and Matthew Lyon
Katie Hafner is a journalist and author who has written for the New York Times and covered technology and science for decades. Matthew Lyon is a writer and editor who worked in policy and communications. Together they interviewed dozens of the original ARPANET engineers to reconstruct the network's early history from firsthand accounts.
